Harry Styles turns 23: 23 of his career-defining moments

In case you missed it, today is the 1st of February 2017, otherwise known as Harry Styles’ 23rd birthday.

After shooting to the limelight at the tender age of 16, we have been lucky enough to watch the One Direction star grow up under the spotlight over the past seven years – and he has certainly acheived a lot in that time.

So I thought that his 23rd birthday was the perfect excuse to look back at the star’s career-defining moments so far, enjoy:

Who knew that this wide-eyed, bowl-cut tot would become one of the biggest stars in the world in about 15 years time?

It’s hard to believe it, but this is the first ever glimpse that we got of superstar Harry Styles – aged just 16 and wowing the X Factor judges with an on-trend scarf around his neck and those trademark curls upon his head.

Sadly, Harry didn’t make it through to Judges’ Houses as a solo artist, however, Simon Cowell had a little trick up his sleeve – putting Harry in a band with four other solo hopefuls, voila: One Direction is born.

As One Direction’s name grew during The X Factor, Harry was forced to get used to a life being hounded by the paparazzi, but he took it all on his stride.

In a vote that shocked everybody, One Direction ended up coming third in the 2010 series of The X Factor – losing out to eventual winner Matt Cardle. Still, Zayn Malik uttered the immortal words: ‘This isn’t the end of One Direction’ and he certainly wasn’t wrong.

Just under a year after coming third, 1D released their debut single: ‘What Makes You Beautiful’. Harry was aged just 17 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Also in 2011, Harry got his first taste of tour life as One Direction set off on their Up All Night tour.

In February 2012, Harry and his 1D bandmates won their first of many BRIT Awards – 18 years old with a BRIT Award in hand? Not too shabby, Harry.

Okay, admittedly not really a career highlight but a good point of reference when we consider just how far Harry has come in the style stakes.

2013 was certainly a busy year for 19-year-old Harry with the star first of all getting his very own waxwork…

…Which was questionable, to be honest…

….He then nabbed his very own Harry Styles doll…

….Before One Direction’s movie, ‘This Is Us’, was released across the globe in August.

As if that wasn’t enough, Harry and the 1D boys also released their first book in 2013.

Also in 2013, Harry started to get his ‘fashion wings’ as he attended the British Fashion Awards in December, gently paving the way for his transition to one of the Best Dressed Men in the celebrity world.

In October 2014, One Direction released their second book, this time a more autobiographical look at their life. Here they are having a giggle in our exclusive Yahoo Celeb UK interview with them.

In November, Harry mingled with the likes of Prince William at the Royal Variety in a dashing leopard-print suit.

Already miles better than his BFA appearance from last year, Harry’s fashion starts to become a little more risque as he gains confidence in his style.

In 2015, Zayn Malik stunned us all when he sensationally quit One Direction, taking our favourite five-piece down to a fabulous four-piece. The band went on a hiatus at the end of 2015.

As One Direction embarked on their final tour before their hiatus, Harry became a figurehead for promoting equality – often posing with a rainbow flag to show his support for LGBT+ rights and becoming somewhat of a role model in the process.

Now aged 22, Harry shocked us all last year when he cut off all his hair for his new movie role. The total babe went on to donate it all to charity.

Oh, and did we mention that this little movie role just so happened to be in Christopher Nolan’s war epic ‘Dunkirk’? Because I couldn’t be more proud about it.

After shying away from the spotlight following 1D’s hiatus, towards the end of last year Harry dropped an exclusive interview with Another Man on us, with the edgy, glossy photoshoot showing us that he has completely rebranded himself from his One Direction heyday – and that he couldn’t be happier about it. I can’t wait to see what the next 365 days bring in the land of Harry Styles!
