Rumour has it that back in Fifth Century Ireland, St. Bridget complained about men forcing women to wait around for a proposal, and the kindly St. Patrick agreed that once every four-years, otherwise known as a leap year, women were “allowed” to do the proposing.
Here are 11 awesome celebrities who said ‘screw you’ to tradition and proposed to their husbands:
Musician Pink is known for being a bolshy independent woman so it’s no surprise that in June 2005 she decided to propose to motocross star Carey Hart.
Obviously Pink didn’t do this in the typically romantic way, instead holding up a sign that read: ‘Will You Marry Me?’ as Carey entered the third lap of the race, followed by one that read: ‘I’m Serious!”
Pink and Carey tied the knot six months later.
2. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer fully embraced convention when she popped the question to her boyfriend David Otunga – getting down on one knee on his birthday and presenting him with an engagement ring.
3. Halle Berry
Halle Berry asked ex-husband David Justice to marry her, they lasted four years in matrimonial bliss.
4. Elizabeth Taylor
Erm, perhaps not the most romantic of examples but Liz Taylor had the guts to ask co-star Mongomery Clift to marry her… And he declined.
Still, Liz managed to nab herself no less than seven husbands so we shouldn’t feel too bad for the knockback.
5. Britney Spears
Yes, it was Britney who proposed to the father of her two sons, Kevin Federline – not the other way. They married in 2004 and after a rather rocky two years they decided to divorce.
6. Billie Piper
Back when she was an eighteen-year-old popstar, Billie popped the question to Radio DJ Chris Evans (not the Hollywood actor).
They got married in 2001, separated in 2004, and finally divorced in 2007 but remain incredibly good friends.
7. Heather Mills
Before Heather was married to Beatles’ legend Sir Paul McCartney she was married to Alfie Karmal, and she’s the one who popped the question.
8. Zsa Zsa Gabor
Our absolute icon, the beautiful, late Zsa Zsa was married a whopping nine times and proposed to every single one of her husbands.
9. Joanne Mas
Danny Dyer and Joanne Mas have been together since… wait for it… 1992, but much like Danny’s onscreen EastEnders’ character, Mick Carter, they never wed.
Also like his onscreen character, it was his partner who proposed last year – with Joanne biting the bullet and asking the father of her three children to become her husband.
Danny obviously accepted the proposal immediately and later shot down ridicule from rent-a-gob Katie Hopkins.
10. Judge Judy
She’s one of the most powerful women in America so it’s no surprise that Judy Sheindlin was the one who buckled up and got down on one knee for her second husband, Jerry Sheindlin, back in 1978.
Judy previously shared: “[H]e tried to weasel out of it… I told him to pick a date. He picked Flag Day.”
11. Kristen Bell
Kristen and her husband Dax Shepard refused to get married until their gay and lesbian friends in America were able to do so too, which is why Kristen celebrated the termination of the Defense Of Marriage Act in 2013 by proposing to Dax… On Twitter.
She wrote: “@daxshepard1 will you marry me? xo #MarriageEquality #LoveIsLove”, to which Dax replied: “F*ck yes!!!!!!!!!!!!”
True love, eh?
